hyperbole@prontomail.comI imagine that by reading and analyzing the content of my livejournal submissions, one would achieve a more thorough and sound understanding of me, how I identify myself, and how I am identified by others. However, for those who neither have the motivation or patience of doing so, I suppose I will facilitate by at least disclosing some information on this page.
In June 2006, I finished my schooling and received a doctorate degree from UC Davis in the field of philosophy with an emphasis in critical theory. Usually, people simply give me blank stares followed by a polite smile and an indifferent head nod to acknowledge that they at least heard me. Lamentably, my doctorate degree, much like my master's degree, has Arnold Schwarzenegger's signature; I find it difficult to invest complete trust in the legitimacy of a degree signed by a bodybuilder and action celebrity. Fortunately, its legitimacy hasn't come into question yet, as in September 2006, I was given a post-doc research position with UC Davis; it's a joint study between the departments of psychology and cultural studies which focuses on sex workers, their identities, and their fantasies. Otherwise, my academic studies are interdisciplinary, but generally focus on fuzzy logic, science, postmodernism, critical theory, identity, ideology/invisible rules, and psychoanalysis. Amusingly, my studies in personal identity and logic are intended, at least partially, to discredit those entities, or at least their contemporary uses.
The research position has been enjoyable so far, and a refreshing change from the assistant teaching while in grad school. Unless I receive a job as a lotto winner, socialite, or a high paying street consultant/proselytizer position in the style of Happy Noodle Boy, I will probably stay with the research project for at least another year.
Outside of school, I have a variety of interests, as indicated below in the brief and atrociously incomplete list of interests. I find that I am a quirky individual both in personality and appearance, and others tend to confirm and validate that assessment. My primary interest is socializing with my friends, as I find they provide the emotional satisfaction which everyone seems to crave and require. This year, I am the co-rehearsal director for the Telemark Dance Troupe of UC Davis, and in addition to being in multiple pieces, I am attempting to choreograph a piece for the first time this year, incorporating wild costumes and unconventional themes -- I will likely be dressed as a squirrel. Furthermore, I am the chair of the Civic Arts Commission for the City of Davis. Although I rarely go dancing at clubs, I always treasure dancing at Deathguild in San Francisco on Monday evenings. Also, I significantly enjoy listening to music from alternative or semi-punk and semi-gothic bands from the 1980s, which is only surpassed by listening to the hypnotic sounds of my guinea pigs. Whereas most people who would be reading this previously knew me outside of the realm of livejournal, I find that I will cease the increasingly incoherent ramblings of this miniature biography. I mainly use and update livejournal both to remain in regular communication with friends, many of whom are geographically distant from me, as well as to catalog my thoughts and experiences for later retrieval. Nevertheless, I always welcome new friends and comrades, so please feel free to comment freely if you are so inclined, even if you don't "personally" know me.
